The drug maker of Viagra is facing growing legal and regulatory scrutiny over its use of a generic drug in a potentially dangerous product.
The Food and Drug Administration has suspended the sale of the generic drug Pfizer Inc.’s Viagra, the company said in a letter sent Friday to U. S. regulators.
The FDA’s letter was issued after a lengthy legal process that took six months and involved a complex process that involved lengthy coordination between the agency and the makers of Pfizer’s generic drugs.
The FDA said the suspension was “sudden” and “irreproveable” in nature.
Pfizer’s drug, sildenafil, is an FDA-approved medication for treating erectile dysfunction. Viagra was the first drug to win approval for the treatment of the disorder in 1998.

The agency also warned that it could face “serious and potentially harmful drug interactions with certain drugs, including Viagra,” which is not approved for use in children.

A company spokeswoman said the company had made “a firm commitment to the regulatory and consumer health community.”
In a letter to the FDA Friday, Pfizer’s drug maker said the company’s actions “promise[nc] that it will not engage in conduct inconsistent with this letter and will do all it can to assist consumers in reporting negative health effects to FDA.”
“Pfizer’s products are a safe and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction,” the company wrote.
Pfizer has been accused of marketing Viagra to children and teenagers, as well as prescribing dangerous medications to children under the age of eight, including the use of the drug to treat a rare disease called pulmonary arterial hypertension in people who have conditions that could cause blood clots.
